How the tarot compatibility calculator works
Step 1: each person’s birth card
The first card for each of you is your tarot birth card, found with Mary K. Greer’s method from Tarot for Your Self, the same one our tarot birth card calculator uses.
- Add the birth month, day and year as whole numbers.
- Add the digits of the total together. If the answer is still over 22, add its digits again.
- The first number of 22 or less is the personality card. 22 is The Fool, because the Fool is unnumbered and belongs at the end of the sequence as well as the start.
The birth card calculator also reduces a two-digit number again to find a soul card. This calculator uses only the personality card, which describes how you meet the world and other people.
Step 2: the relationship card
Add the two birth card numbers together, counting The Fool as 22. If the total is 22 or less, that’s your relationship card. If it’s over 22, add its digits once: 41 becomes 4 + 1 = 5.
This second step is this site’s own simple method, made for reflection. It doesn’t come from Greer, and there’s no old tradition behind it. Treat the result as a card to talk about together.
Worked example 1: Strength and The Lovers
Imagine one person born on 7 July 1992. 7 + 7 + 1992 = 2006, and 2 + 0 + 0 + 6 = 8, so their birth card is Strength. Their partner was born on 4 September 1991. 9 + 4 + 1991 = 2004, and 2 + 0 + 0 + 4 = 6: The Lovers.
Add the two: 8 + 6 = 14. That’s 22 or less, so their relationship card is Temperance.
Worked example 2: The Sun and The Fool
Now take someone born on 15 March 1972. 3 + 15 + 1972 = 1990, and 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 19: The Sun. On the birth card calculator, 19 is the one number that gives three cards, because it reduces to 10 (Wheel of Fortune) and then to 1 (The Magician). Here only the personality card counts: The Sun, 19.
Their partner was born on 18 May 1970. 5 + 18 + 1970 = 1993, and 1 + 9 + 9 + 3 = 22: The Fool, counted as 22. Add the two: 19 + 22 = 41. That’s over 22, so add the digits: 4 + 1 = 5. Their relationship card is The Hierophant.

Same card and mirror pairs
Two people with the same birth card often recognise a lot of themselves in each other. That can feel like instant understanding, but it can also mean a shared blind spot, so read your card’s “habit to watch” as something to look out for together.
With the same card, your relationship card is simply that number doubled. Two Hermits (9 + 9 = 18) get The Moon. Two people with Justice (11 + 11 = 22) get The Fool. Two Fools (22 + 22 = 44, then 4 + 4 = 8) get Strength.
We call cards from the same birth card group “mirror pairs”. These are cards that reduce to the same single digit, such as The Chariot (7) and The Tower (16), or Strength (8) and The Star (17). Mirror pairs tend to want the same thing underneath while going about it in different ways.
- The Chariot and The Tower: 7 + 16 = 23, and 2 + 3 = 5, The Hierophant.
- Strength and The Star: 8 + 17 = 25, and 2 + 5 = 7, The Chariot.

Any two cards that add up to exactly 22 share The Fool as their relationship card. The Magician (1) with The World (21) is one example, and The Lovers (6) with The Tower (16) is another.

Tarot compatibility and zodiac compatibility
Zodiac compatibility compares sun signs, a system from astrology. Tarot has its own link to the zodiac: the Golden Dawn gave each sign a Major Arcana card, such as Strength for Leo and Justice for Libra. You can look up both of your zodiac tarot cards and read them alongside your birth cards.
The two methods don’t agree with each other, and they aren’t meant to. The birth card uses your whole date of birth, including the year, so two people with the same sun sign can have very different birth cards. Neither system has evidence that it predicts which couples last. Both are useful as a shared language for how you each love.
What the calculator can’t tell you
A pair of birthdays can’t tell you whether someone loves you, whether they’re faithful, or whether a relationship will last. It can’t see how you treat each other, which matters far more than any card. No card pair means two people are incompatible: the cards describe styles and themes, and people with every combination build happy lives together.
If a relationship leaves you feeling afraid, controlled or unsafe, that is the thing to act on, whatever the cards say. Talk to someone you trust or contact a local support service.

Can tarot say we’re incompatible?
No. No pair of cards means two people can’t be happy together. Some relationship cards describe harder lessons, but how you treat each other matters far more than any card.
Why is my card different from the birth card calculator?
It shouldn’t be. Both use the same personality card. The tarot birth card calculator also shows a soul card, and a third card for a 19, which this page leaves out.
Why can’t we get The Magician as our relationship card?
Two birth cards always add up to at least 2, and totals over 22 reduce to between 3 and 12. So the sum never lands on 1. The Magician can still describe a relationship when you draw it in an ordinary reading.
What if we have the same birth card?
Your relationship card is your number doubled, reduced if it’s over 22. Read your shared “habit to watch” as something to help each other with.
Does it work for friends, family or work partners?
Yes. The descriptions are written for love, but the themes apply to any close pairing. Read “partner” as “friend”, “sibling” or “colleague”.
