How to Read a Tarot Card as Feelings

A card’s “as feelings” meaning is its usual meaning turned towards one question: what goes on inside the other person when they think about you? The Eight of Pentacles is hard work in a career reading; as feelings, it is someone serious and committed who wants to build something real with you.

Four things help more than memorising the tables:

  • The suit. Cups are emotional: affection, tenderness, hurt or longing. Wands are attraction and chemistry. Swords are thoughts more than feelings. Pentacles are steady feelings shown through time and effort. A Major Arcana card suggests the connection matters to them, for better or worse.
  • Upright or reversed. Upright, read the feelings at face value. Reversed, they are usually there but blocked, mixed or changing, not missing.
  • The question. “How does Sam feel about me right now?” gets a clearer card than “Does Sam love me?”
  • The rest of the reading. Other cards show what the person may do and what is in the way. The relationship spread gives you, them and the relationship a card each.

Above all, one card is a snapshot, not a verdict. The Four of Swords says the person needs space right now, not that they have gone for good. The Two of Cups describes a real connection, not a promise about how the story ends.

The Cards That Show the Strongest Feelings

These are the warmest cards to draw when you ask how someone feels, upright:

  • The Lovers: one of the strongest signs of attraction in the deck, on several levels at once.
  • Two of Cups: “about as good as it gets.” A real, mutual connection with someone who sees you as an equal.
  • Ace of Cups: affection, tenderness and a genuine emotional pull. They may be falling for you.
  • Ten of Cups: deeply happy and at home with you, and picturing a future together.
  • Queen of Cups: deep, tender care, often more than they show.
  • The Sun: happy, warm and proud to be associated with you.
  • Four of Wands: at home with you, and perhaps thinking about commitment.

For attraction and desire, the fire cards lead the way:

  • Ace of Wands: strong attraction and a physical spark; the start of desire, not a promise.
  • Knight of Wands: someone who finds you thrilling and wants to pursue you, though not always with long-term plans.
  • Eight of Wands: fast-growing attraction. Expect messages, calls or plans to meet.
  • The Magician: strongly drawn to you and likely to take the initiative.
  • King of Wands and Queen of Wands: confident interest and open admiration, from someone likely to be direct about it.
  • The Devil: strong desire, even obsession, which may be more about wanting than about deep connection. Look at how they actually treat you.

For serious, long-term feelings, look to the Ten of Pentacles (picturing a shared future), the Knight of Pentacles (steady and loyal), the King of Pentacles and The Emperor (protective, loyal and serious), The Hierophant (wants to make it official) and The World (content and complete with you: “not a passing crush”).

Cards for Mixed or Confused Feelings

These cards describe feelings that are real but unsettled. Mixed signals often mean exactly that: the person’s feelings are mixed, too.

  • The Moon: drawn to you and anxious about it at the same time.
  • Seven of Cups: undecided, perhaps keeping options open or attracted to an idealised picture of you.
  • Two of Swords: torn. They care but have not let themselves decide, and may go quiet whenever things get serious.
  • Two of Pentacles: they like you, but their attention is divided, not because they are playing games.
  • Five of Wands: attracted but also frustrated, competitive or unsure.
  • The Hanged Man: they may care but feel unable to act right now.
  • Two of Wands and Justice: interested, and weighing things up carefully.

Reversed, several cards describe someone who runs hot and cold: The Fool, Wheel of Fortune, Temperance, the Ace of Wands, Eight of Wands and Knight of Cups, and the Knight of Swords. With cards like these, watch what the person does over time, not just what they say.

Cards That Show Distance or Someone Holding Back

These are the hardest cards to draw when you hope for a warm answer, but most of them describe someone who still cares and is not showing it.

Several of these card pages give the same advice: pushing for answers rarely helps. Giving the person space while being honest about your own needs usually works better.

Reversed Cards as Feelings

A reversed card rarely means “they feel nothing.” Most reversals point to feelings that are there but held back, mixed or changing. The Ace of Cups reversed is feelings held back by fear of getting hurt; The Sun reversed is positive feelings dimmed by stress, insecurity or a misunderstanding.

Some cards read more hopefully reversed, because a hard feeling is easing:

The warm cards work the other way: the Two of Cups reversed can be feelings cooling or stronger on one side, and the Nine of Cups reversed someone enjoying the attention more than the connection. Many reversals also have a second reading, which the card pages explain; let the other cards, and what you actually know, decide between them.

Court Cards as Feelings: the Person or Their Feelings?

Is a court card describing the person, or how they feel? In a feelings position, read it as how they feel and how they show it. It says nothing about gender or age: a Queen can describe a man, and a Page someone of sixty who is new to these feelings. The rank gives the style, and the suit the flavour:

A court card that sounds like someone else entirely may point to another person in the situation. Tarot court cards explained shows how to tell which reading applies.

Major Arcana as Feelings

Feelings, Intentions and Actions

How someone feels, what they intend to do and what they actually do are three different questions, and a feelings card answers only the first. The Hanged Man is someone who cares but feels unable to act, and the Seven of Cups feelings that are hard to rely on. That is why so many card pages give the same advice: watch their actions. For a fuller picture, use a reading that looks beyond feelings:

What Tarot Can and Can’t Tell You About Someone’s Feelings

Tarot cannot read another person’s mind. It gives you a picture to reflect on and a nudge about your own next step. Treat a feelings card as a question to check against what the person says and does, not as a fact about them.

Their feelings belong to them. A warm card is not a reason to keep pursuing someone who has said no, and a cool card is not proof that someone is lying to you. The most reliable way to know how someone feels is still to ask, and to respect the answer.

Asking the same question again and again leads to confusion, because you keep drawing until you get the card you want. Draw once and come back when something has changed. If you keep wondering about an ex, the broken heart spread looks at your healing rather than their feelings.

If you feel unsafe, controlled or afraid in a relationship, please talk to someone you trust or a support service for domestic abuse where you live, rather than the cards.
